Happy Birthday Joy

On a count back we reckon it is probably over 40 years since Joy and I have spent her birthday together so we decided to do it in style. I baked Nigella's chocolate cake again, this time making the rich chocolate icing, to enjoy as dessert that evening but our main treat was a trip to the Billabong Koala Park. This private zoo is not far from Wauchope and Joy had been before and was keen to go again as they had added to their animal collection.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day. It is a well organised park with presentations made throughout the day about each type of animal. We saw spider monkeys, dingos, snow tigers, red pandas, a HUGE crocodile and koalas. Shrek, the crocodile didn't behave himself and we waited ages to watch him come out of his water hole and be fed by the keeper, but to no avail. It was only later in the day when we were going past again that he was out in the shallows for all to see.

We took our own picnic lunch, a platter that Joy had ordered from her Deli. What a treat that was, and we could see other patrons looking on with envy!

After lunch it was time for the koala. In their enclosure there must have been at least 20 koalas in various states. To see them sleeping so high up in the branches is amazing. You wonder how they don't fall out. One or two were active and we were able to see them eating their gum leaves. The keeper arrived and gave us an interesting presentation about koalas in general, and then about the ones at the park before giving us an opportunity to pat one.

On our way to Wauchope we did a small detour past Wauchope's water storage dam at Corrawa. This place is a credit to the local council. It was all set up with picnic areas and barbecues and would certainly tempt you to make good use of the area.

We finished off our day by lighting the birthday cake and enjoying a slice or two. Joy was very excited to have had someone make her a birthday cake so I was pleased I had made the effort.
