Medlow Bath to Wauchope

Joy, my sister, and her partner Peter arrived in Medlow Bath on Monday evening. They had driven down to pick us up to take us back to their place in Wauchope (close to Port Mcquarie north of Sydney).
After a leisurely start to the day, and a "smart" lunch (terminology in our family for lunch before midday) we headed off. We were only going as far as Norah Head (about 150km north of Sydney) as Joy had booked a couple nights accommodation in a cabin in the camping ground for us for two nights. We travelled along the Bell Lines of Road from Medlow Bath, down through Sydney, and then to Norah Head.

This lighthouse is not on a lean - just the photographer !
One of the points of interest in the area is the Norah Head lighthouse. This historic, bit still working lighthouse, was built in 1903, as the area has been the site of over 40 shipwrecks. A strong wind made our visit a bit unpleasant but it did show just how rough it could be. We had also been hoping to see some the whales that are migrating along the coast but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

We had an enjoyable meal at the local Sports Club, which bordered the camping ground. The camping ground was well resourced but we were most surprised by the number of rabbits residing in it. An eradication programme was in place but obviously it wasn't very effective.
The next day we made a trip down to The Entrance, to see the pelicans. Each day at 3:30pm a local group of volunteers feed them, as well manage their health and welfare. It was quite a spectacular sight to see them so close. Quite magnificent birds.

On our way to Wauchope the next day, we did a detour through The Hunter Valley. It is a huge wine growing area and we only really got a quick over view. One place I would be particularly keen to visit is the Hunter Valley Gardens but you would definitely need at least a full day to visit the 60acres of gardens. http://www.huntervalleygardens.com.au/

This is an area where you could easily spend several days and then still it wouldn't be long enough. We had lunch at the Blue Tongue Lizard Brewery and winery before the final drive to Wauchope. http://www.hunterresort.com.au/bluetongue/

It was nearly 5pm by the time we arrived and were pleased to be able to stretch the legs and relax for the evening.

  1. You've got your own photos again! Was the lighthouse leaning like Pisa, or was that you leaning?!
