Return to Athens

Saturday morning saw the end of our sailing trip. We returned the yacht to Levkos, which although is technically an island, it is joined to the mainland by a causeway. It was very sad to say goodbye to our sailing friends after such a great trip but all good things must come to an end. We headed back to Athens on the 7am bus as there were no seats left on the more convenient 9:30am. It meant that we got to Athens at mid day and gave us plenty of time to get out to our B&B again for the night. The bus trip took us across some interesting landscape and along roads that were definitely in need of some repair. It was very obvious that the Greek economy has no money as there were lots of new roads that construction had been started and then abandoned. These included concrete fly-over roads that went no where. On one of our previous trips to Greece we had done a tour of classical Greece and it had taken us across the Corinth Canal and their new Rio–Antirrio bridge. It is a magnificent structure and we were lucky enough to go over it again. The tolls for a bus are a little steep though - €64. We also went over the Corinth Canal but you had to be looking at just the right time or you would have missed it. It is also an amazing structure and of course is 100 years older than the bridge.

Back in Athens we negotiated our way to our B&B on a public bus, Janet had given us excellent instructions on how to do this and then she was able to pick us up from the bus stop close to her place. For late September Athens was very hot with the temperature up to 34 degrees. The swimming pool was very tempting but certainly as warm as the Ionian Sea. Bracing I would say but refreshing. We had a relaxing evening, eating at the local taverna before having an early night. We only have two weeks of our trip left and this will include four days on Crete and a week on Naxos with my friend Averil and her family.
