Out and about in Christchurch

It is quite a while since we have been back to Christchurch.  This time we stayed well clear of the central city area. even viewing from Moorhouse Avenue it is easy to see there isn't much there. Still large tracts of empty sections.

Other areas are in full rebuild mode. Large expansive subdivisions are mushrooming all over town, some in areas that look dubious even to me.  Doug is working in these areas on a daily basis as he has contracts to do the piping up new homes. To be building on sand and close to wetlands doesn't seem to make sense.

One such area is on the old Wigram airfield. Hundreds of places are being built here and this was where Stephen worked with Doug one day.

Driving across town to these subdivisions can be a mission in itself. For us 'Invercargillites' not used to dense traffic it can be varying tiresome.  We were staying out in the NZMCA camp close to Rolleston. The Main South Road is SO busy that at times it took us make a a left hand onto this road.
Not knowing exactly where you are going can also cause the stress levels to rise. Many a time we have missed a turn and ended several kilometres in the wrong direction. And that is after you have dodged rows of orange cones. I think those who invested in the orange cones immediately after the earthquakes must be laughing all the way to the bank!!

A scene on Dyer Road. Look closely and a burst watermain
is adding to the kaos.

One new shopping centre that has sprung up is The Tannery, set in the heart of Woolston. Now Woolston has been traditionally an industrial part of the city so the developers of this upmarket shopping centre/mall have made a brave call.  It is still not finished and all the shops are not yet occupied but it is easy to see how the finished look will be which I have been told is similar to many in Melbourne.  Well worth a visit but make sure it is a day close to payday!!
