Volunteering

Today was our first day out working to help families who have no insurance and no way to fix their earthquake broken houses. Habitat for Humanity have identified a long list of properties that need to be fixed. The reasons why these people have no insurance are many and varied, and so it good to be able to help in some way. I went to Lyttelton to a house just in front of where The Timeball once was sitting proud. Painting was my job for the day and tomorrow will be more of the same. Stephen was working outside on a recladding project. The weather will determine his job tomorrow. On our way home we called into the home of a young single mum and her 8 year old daughter. They have been without hot water since Christmas 2010 heating water for a bath once a week with the electric kettle. The new cylinder was sourced at cost price (paid for by donations)and fitted by volunteers today. Ken, who was painting with me is an electrician and he completed the job. I am sure that there will be two very grateful people having a shower soon. I am sure that is just one of many people and stories we will hear about over the next wo weeks.

  1. That's lovely - what a great thing to be able to do. I bet that poor Mum and her daughter are so happy after their new cylinder! Looking forward to hearing more stories from the Red Zone :-) xx
