A trip to Oxford

Thursday was Jessica's birthday and we decided that a trip to Oxford would be a good way to celebrate. It is about a 45 minute drive from here in Duston, depending on the traffic. The best way to get into Oxford city is to use the Park and Ride. There is plenty of parking on the outskirts of the city followed by a bus ride. Once in the central city it was very easy to see that this was indeed a very sensible choice. The streets are narrow and the buses numerous and the streets were full of pedestrians.

Our first stop was the River Head Pub for lunch. Here on the banks of the Thames we enjoyed a yummy lunch.

After a walk along the river, passed all the Oxford College rowing clubs, we found ourselves a place to hire a river punt. There was some debate about whether to pay for the chauffeur or to take the risk of tipping ourselves into the river!!! In the end we opted for Laura to take us around the loop, passed the botanical gardens and some of the Oxford Colleges. A very enjoyable excurision.

We then walked back through the centre of Oxford to find our bus. On the way we saw many of the buildings that you associate with this city, including the library in Radcliffe Square.

The trip back to Duston took us a bit longer on account of the traffic at that time of day. Before heading home for tea we stopped in at The Fox and Hounds (their local) for a drink. A fitting end to a good day.
