Summerlee Heritage Park

This museum of Scottish Industrial Life was just a 20 minute drive from where we are staying and we thought it looked like a good place to explore on Thursday afternoon. And we were right. It is a huge complex on the grounds of a 19th ironworks and it caters for all ages. The main exhibition hall takes you through the industrial history of Scotland, telling the stories of the areas pre industrial days, the rise and fall of Scotland's iron and steel industries and how the workers lived and worked during these times.

After exploring this building we followed the trail to view a replica of the very first steel hulled barge, the Vulcan. Further on there were the miners cottages spanning a period of 1840's to 1960's. Stephen was pleased he wasn't having to sleep in the 1840's beds. They were definitely for much shorter people than he is. Conditions were also somewhat primitive by our standards today. Our final walk took us past a coal mine, some very large machinery used in a timbermill and the one of the biggest locomotives we have ever seen. It was built for South Africa and was 90 feet long.

All in all a good day out - and it was both FREE entry and parking.
