Stirling Castle and The Falkirk Wheel

Both these attractions are relatively close together and as we had been invited for an evening meal with some NZ friends in Stirling we thought we would make a day of it in that area.

First stop was the Falkirk. This was an attraction that we had been told was a must see. It truly is an amazing engineering feat and the sheer size of the project has to be seen to be believed. Opened only in 2002 it connects two canal. Once a series of locks was used and it took a boat all day to make the transition. This wheel takes only 5 minutes. There was an opportunity to take a boat ride for the experience but we chose to walk around the path and view from above and below to watch how it actually works.

There are plenty of other activites if you wanted to make it an all day trip. There are lots of trails to walk both in the surrounding countryside as well as the tow paths, plus a water park for children. In fact the water park is not just for smaller children. There are activites like mini locks and water wheels that appeal to all ages.

Next stop was Stirling Castle. What a great place to put a defensive castle. The views are for miles in all directions.

We had a great time exploring - the palace, the great hall, the great kitchens and the special exhibitions 'The other Mary' (Mary of Guise mother of Mary Queen of Scots), The Queen Anne Garden and the making of the tapestries.

Stirling Castle has had a long and eventful history from the 12th century and was the. Centre of culture and art during the 16th century. It was later taken over and used by the army right up until 1964. It was after1964 that a total restoration programme took place returning it to its former glory and it has become a tourist attraction. It is another 'must' if visiting the area.
