Scampston Walled Garden

We had two nights at our campsite at the Hideaway as initially we thought we would spend a second day exploring the city of York. However once we got out to the country we decided that we had probably seen enough of the city and would prefer to explore other areas. One pamphlet we collected was for the Scampston Walled Garden and this was about 30 minutes from where we were staying. So after a short morning stroll around the Husthwaite (the village we were next door to) we set off for the gardens. A GPS always seems to take you the shortest distance so we saw lots of country lanes and farmland.

The 12 century church in the village and below the views of farmland from the back of the church.

The gardens have a very long history being in the same family since 1690 and the Hall remodelled around 1800. The walled garden is full of 'rooms' each with its own style and point of interest.

The Grounds were designed by 'Capability Brown' and we enjoyed its park like quality with lakes and well marked trails. There was the Palladian Bridge, an icehouse recently restored and there were even sheep grazing with some resting under a 300 year old Sweet Chestnut.

The website link http://www.scampston.co.uk/gardens.html gives lots of information plus photos that do much more justice to it they ours do.
